Jasmine Godinez, a female sophomore and wrestler from Hialeah Miami Lakes (HML), will be flying to Dallas, Texas, on May 10 to compete in the Women’s World Wrestling Championship.
Godinez has been wrestling for almost two years for HML. She competes in the 106 pound weight division. She won the GMAC women’s wrestling competition for the county and achieved third place in the Florida State championship in February. Godinez is also a two-time regional qualifier in the men’s division for Miami-Dade County.
Godinez said, “When I joined the HML wrestling team, I was excited but nervous. However watching the team last year when my older brother wrestled motivated me to try something new. Thanks to my family, my coaches and my team, I will be representing HML at a world-wide competition.”
The Trojan wrestling team includes 25 participants and Godinez is the only female on the team. HML students are eligible to join the team beginning in their freshman year as she did. Godinez is also a member of the Trojan cross-country team, where she has earned second-best long distance time among the girls on the team.
