The Hialeah Miami Lakes (HML) Trojans men’s volleyball team is off to a great start this season with an 11-1 record. The Trojans returned seven players from last year’s team that went 5-13. The men’s volleyball team is 9-0 in District 13.
Leading the Trojans this season is Alain Martinez, setter and captain of the team. Martinez is ranked both in the state of Florida and nationally on Maxpreps.com for assists. With a veteran team and players like Tomas DiContanzo and Kevin Mena, who both play middle and are also ranked for blocks and hitting percentage.
The Trojans also added a few new players including Ah’mon Phillips, Jahkary Fenn, Ricardo Mascaro and Doan Ramon. Phillips is a tremendous asset to the Trojans volleyball team because he has been playing volleyball since he was nine years old. He is a setter and outside hitter for the Trojans.
After spring break, the Trojans will be tested with their upcoming matches versus Krop, Braddock, Coral Park and Goleman. The volleyball team has qualified to play in the Greater Miami Athletic Conference Championship, which determines who is the best team in Miami-Dade County on April 10.
HML will be hosting District 13 volleyball championship on April 16 with semifinals at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The finals will be held on April 18 at 6 p.m. The Trojans are looking to finish strong this season, win a district championship and hopefully a state championship. The Trojans last two home games are on April 8 at 3:30 p.m. against Coral Park and April 11 at 3:30 p.m. against Goleman.
