Hope for Autism United Soccer Foundation opens in Miami Lakes

Founded in 2013, the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Hope for Autism United Soccer Foundation, also known as Autism Soccer, has a new home in Miami Lakes thanks in large part to a growing list of sponsors and donors. Autism Soccer’s leader, the energetic former 2nd Division Soccer professional Oscar Amuz, says his dream of helping children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and intellectual disabilities through soccer has come true.

Autism Soccer’s new headquarters are located at 15165 N.W. 77 Avenue, Suite 1006, on the street also known as “Wellness Way.”

The program teaches fundamental soccer skills to children with ASD and other related developmental issues, providing a supportive environment that encourages a life-long love of exercise, while helping to combat obesity. The weekly practice helps to improve fine and gross motor skills, encourages communication and social behavior, including the ability to follow directions, take turns and consider other teammates.

The community can find out more about the program on Friday, January 9, 2015 during an house and special reception to be held at the program’s new headquarters. Amuz and other Autism Soccer personnel will be on hand to provide information about the year-round soccer training. Shortly before the start of the event at 5:30 p.m., Miami Lakes Mayor Wayne Slaton is expected to be present along with members of the Town Council to participate in a   ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Amuz’s goals include to expand the program beyond Miami Lakes and Miami-Dade County, double the number of kids involved to 200 within a year, continue to find additional local sponsors and donors. Now a Miami-Dade County Public Schools-approved contractor, he hopes to continue to make inroads with area schools.

“Most major Autism support organizations are based elsewhere. I aim to grow and keep our resources local, right here in our community,” said Amuz.
