The middle school golf team at Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy (JMMAST) finished up their best season ever this past April. With matches against local schools Hialeah Gardens Middle and Highland Oaks Middle, the team of six golfers improved each round on their way to county invitationals.
The co-ed team consists of two eighth graders, Jessica Ruiz-Camargo and Nathan Serpa, three seventh graders, Fabriano Ayala, Giovanni Cruz and Jay Dieguez and sixth grader Bryan Blanco.
Golf coach Ed Cruz says, “It’s been exciting to see their scores go down with each course we play. They are improving their skills, learning the fine points of the game, and they are a tight knit group that has fun together.”
The North division qualifying meet took place on April 16 at the Country Club of Miami where the team holds their practices. JMMAST again performed well with a low score of 62 on nine holes by Ayala, and Serpa and Cruz both with 64. As a result, the team qualified for the county finals at Palmetto Golf Course on April 25. Avoiding the water hazards and saving strokes out of the sand, the team finished in fifth place for Miami-Dade County.
A successful season on JMMAST’s golf team leaves high hopes for next year’s team and the returning players. No matter their scores, they can look forward to summer vacation spending time on local courses with friends.
