Barbara Goleman Senior High School awarded senior Mark A. Osorio with the second annual Coach Rick Quintanilla Scholarship Award, organized and funded in memory of the late Goleman football coach, who lost his battle with cancer in 2011.

“It's with great pride that we continue this tradition as part of Goleman football,” said John Murillo, coach Rick's father and Goleman football coach. “The scholarship began with the aim of keeping coach Rick's memory alive by acknowledging those that exemplified some of his trademark characteristics – honor, courage and commitment. Mark Osorio exhibits all this and more.”

Osorio, who was an active member of the Goleman football team during his entire high school career, graduated at the top of his class with a 3.80 GPA and a 1400 on his SAT's. Osorio suffered a severe gash to his bicep as a sophomore, which could have been a season-ending injury. However, his  focus, commitment and determination led him back to the field and as a junior, he led the team to a 7 and 3 record which tied for the best season in Goleman football history.

Osorio was a versatile player who held positions as linebacker and quarterback. Much like coach Rick, Osorio plans to play football at the collegiate level. He will attend Warner University this fall and take the field with the same passion coach Quintanilla played with before receiving his cancer diagnosis.
