After winning its third consecutive district championship this season, Mater Lakes Academy boys’ basketball team is now arguably the powerhouse in 5A District 14 and next season is looking bright for the Bears as some of their starting players are returning for another run at a fourth straight title and state championship berth.
Finishing with a 6-0 record in district competition and topping off schools such as fellow district rivals Monsignor Pace, Bears closed off the season with a 16-11 record to win the district title for a third time. The district championship game was held at iMater High School, where the Bears and Spartans dueled it out for the right to be called district champs. The final score of the game was 108-85. Led by the number 3 scorer in Miami Dade County, senior Cyrus Largie (24.3 ppg) was able to lead Mater Lakes to a three-peat.
This season has taken the team across the country as well including California to face off against an elite high school competition. It was an excellent season with a rewarding ending for departing players including Hanley Poy, Cesar Linarez, Landon Martinez, Kamani Butler, Pablo Marchany and Jason Blanco. This is not the end for the Mater Lakes Bears as the future looks promising with young players such as Dominic Rivera and Julian Garcia to keep the success going for years to come.
