For Susan Summons, women’s basketball coach at Miami Dade College, the accolades keep accumulating.
Summons celebrated her 600th career win late last year when the Lady Sharks defeated Daytona State College,
85-71, while on the road.
“It is tremendous to accomplish such a legacy that will stand in the history of this MDC program but even more rewarding to know that we have helped so many students athletes reach their own educational and athletic milestones,” Summons said then in a school press release.
Summons, 53, has led the team at Miami Dade College for 34 years and previously spent three seasons at the same position at Roxbury Community College.
While at Miami Dade College, Summons and the Lady Sharks made 19 appearances in the Florida College System Activities Association state tournaments.
The team had an overall 20-12 record this season until the coronavirus halted competition on March 4.
As a former professional basketball player for the Women’s Basketball League’s New Jersey Gems and the New England Gulls, Summons was inducted to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tenn. in 2018 as one of the
‘Trailblazers and Pioneers of the Game’.
She is a professor in the college’s Life Sciences, Health and Wellness Department and was twice named an endowed teaching chair at the college.
Summons was also chosen as one of the 100 Most Influential Sports Educators in America by the Institute for International Sport, the school said.
