Sean Davis broke loose for a 65-yard touchdown run and helped his Miami Lakes Optimist flag football travel 8-U team win the Battle of Florida tournament at the Miami Dolphins practice facility in Davie.

But other teams for the MIA Flag group also had success at the same tournament and seeking the national championships in Orlando and the Battle of Minnesota in January.

The 6U and 12U teams also took home the Battle of Florida championship in their respective divisions.

The 10U, which was assembled two weeks before the event, came close to winning the championship against the top team, Red Zones, and was honored for an excellence performance for a group who only played together for three weeks.

Now the teams are preparing for the Battle of Miami in December, when they face some of the toughest teams from Miami, then set their sights on the national championship in the Battle of Orlando and world competition at the Battle of Minnesota in January.

And the opposing teams know they are among the best in country.

The 6U team is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation, 8U is ranked No. 5 and 10U is ranked 11th.

The travel teams are part of the Optimist Club of Miami Lakes recreation flag football team, where the top players are chosen to play in national competitions.

The MVPs for the travel teams this year are 8U team Jacobs Thomas on offense and Issac Pena on defense; 10U team Frankie Sosa on offense and Adrian Riveron on defense; and 12U Matthew Martin on defense and Daniel Riveron on offense.
