STU catcher Nelson Mompierre drafted by the New York Mets

St. Thomas University catcher Nelson Mompierre was drafted in the 29th round (860th overall) by the New York Mets in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft. Marrero became the second player from St. Thomas to be drafted in the 2018 MLB Draft joining fellow catcher Elih Marrero  (8th round, Red Sox).

Mompierre, hit .395 with 77 RBI and a team-best 15 home runs and 25 doubles in 2018. Mompierre ranked seventh in the nation in doubles, eighth in RBI, and ninth in slugging percentage (.754).

The 2018 Sun Conference Player of the Year, a First-Team NAIA All-American and a First-Team All-Conference selection, Mompierre registered 20 multiple RBI performances this season while recording at least one extra-base hit in 24 games.   

Mompierre was part of a St. Thomas University team that led the NAIA statistically in batting average (.361), runs scored (652), hits (817) and doubles (197) in 2018.

Under the direction of head coach Jorge Perez, the 2018 Bobcats set the school record for wins in a season (56), won The Sun Conference regular-season championship and advanced to the NAIA World Series for the sixth time in school history.
