Two HML students honored by Junior Orange Bowl Committee

On April 8, two Hialeah Miami Lakes (HML) students, Erik Fernandez and Naomi Valdez, were honored at a ceremony recognizing the achievements of athletes in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
Both students received the Outstanding Scholar Athlete award and scholarship from the Junior Orange Bowl Committee. The scholarship award was $1,000 per student.
Fernandez, a senior, participated in cross country, soccer and tennis during his four years at HML. He also achieved the third highest GPA in the Trojan Chapter of the National Honor Society for which he was honored in an additional ceremony on May 18 at Shula’s Grand Ballroom.
Fernandez was named to the Trojan Hall of Fame in a school-based ceremony on May 21. He plans to attend the University of Central Florida, College of Engineering and Computer Science and his intended major is aerospace/mechanical engineering.
Valdez played soccer and tennis for HML. She also served as team co-captain for soccer for two years. She has the second highest GPA in the class of 2019 which is 5.061 weighted. Valdez was also named to the Trojan Hall of Fame on May 21. Valdez will be attending Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. She plans to study environmental engineering with a minor in law.
