Our Neighborhoods: Lake Martha

Community By Megan Jacobo, Reporter Wednesday, June 3, 2020

History

The Graham Companies developed the Lake Martha residential community in the 1970s.
The lake is named for Martha Jane Toms, who was very active in the community and was an early president of The Miami Lakes Women’s Club.
She was married to the late Jerry Toms, who ran The Graham Companies’ dairy operations until he retired in 1998.
The community is fully developed with 221 properties, which include single-family homes and townhomes.
It is centrally located along Miami Lakes Drive and Miami Lakeway South.
And as with many of
the lakes in town, Lake Martha can be seen from bordering roads and the view can be enjoyed by both residents and passersby.
Amenities

Most homes have water views and many of those that are built along the lake’s edge have docks.
Homes feature clay barrel roofs; some have architectural details such as three arches and grillwork along the facades.
The community is in walking distance to the Cypress Village
Shopping Center, the shops and restaurants along Main Street and Shula’s Athletic Club.
The Miami Lakes K-8 Center is close by, for students enrolled in Kindergarten through eighth grade. The school received an “A” grade from the state.

Who lives there?

There is a mix of property owners and renters. Some residents have lived there for four decades.
Antonieta Kelly has resided in the Lake Martha townhomes since 1977.
“It’s beautiful,” Kelly said. “I love it here. It’s quiet and I love the neighbors.”
Lately, many young families have moved in, Kelly said.

What does it cost?

A two-bedroom, two-bath home is currently listed for sale for $329,000.
The annual homeowner association fee is $200 for lakefront properties and $150 for dry lots.
The fee covers lake maintenance, the HOA said.
