Parade for veterans

The 41st Annual Veterans Day Parade, the oldest such celebration in Miami-Dade County, traveled along an 8.5-mile route through Miami Lakes on Nov.15.

And for a change, it was a gloriously bright Sunday morning.

Sponsored by Miami Lakes AutoMall; the Town of Miami Lakes, its Veterans Committee and The Graham Companies, spectators saw town council members and their families wave flags from pickups and Jeeps.

There were golf carts and classic cars, an antique police car, fire trucks, military rigs, a pontoon boat and a Miami-Dade Police helicopter towed on a trailer.

The town provided a livestream of the event on its social media pages which included drone footage of the line of cars that moved through the town’s tree-lined streets.

Fans of such civic celebrations may have missed hearing the booming drums and horns of school kids in marching bands, or seeing the Brownie troops and the beauty queens.

They couldn’t be there because of the pandemic.

But that was beside the point.

The goal of the day, no matter what, was to honor veterans and those who are currently serving in the military.
