When the CMX Cinemas Miami Lakes 17 reopened Sept. 18, it welcomed moviegoers who relaxed before and after the shows along Main Street.
Since Miami-Dade County didn’t then allow concession sales inside the multi-plex, movie buffs turned to businesses nearby to eat.
“It has been a blessing,” said Yohana Hoeschele, owner of Brigadeiros Boutique on Main Street. “We have had more business [come] our way and in Main Street in general since the movie theater has opened.”
Her shop sells Brazilian-style truffles and other pastries, as well as adult beverages to go with them.
“We pray and hope that we only move forwards and not backwards,” Hoeschele said. “We all need to come together and do something to bring more people to the shops in Main Street, Miami Lakes.”
Though her business remained open all year, she is welcoming more customers.
“We are happy to be back,” she said.
After being shuttered six months, the movie house at 6711 Main St. showed six films its first weekend.
CMX Cinemas said on Sept. 28 that it would immediately resume selling popcorn and other snacks. Moviegoers may remove masks and eat only when they’re seated inside the theaters.
Other dining options in the same block as the theater are many: LA Sweetz Cupcakes; Pizza Scene (slices and pies); Cold Stone Creamery (ice cream), Salsa Fiesta Grill (Mexican food); 107 Taste (Pan-Asian fusion) and Anacapri (Italian fine dining).
A neighborhood stroll leads to other cuisines: Spanish (100 Montaditos); Nicaraguan (El Novillo); French (Vie de France Bakery & Cafe); Thai (Thai Cafe), Chinese (Pei Wei); Cuban (Sergio’s Cuban Cafe) and American (Shula’s Steak 2, Jersey Mike’s, Miller’s Ale House, Chicken Kitchen, Dunkin, Gerardo’s Marketplace and Bolay).
While inside theaters, moviegoers must wear masks and maintain social distancing, per the county order.
The weekend of Sept. 25, showings expanded to nine films – a mix of thrillers, a documentary and popular animated movies for kids at the cineplex, formerly called Cobb Theatres:
-- “Tenet,” an action/spy thriller, stars John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, rated PG-13.
-- “Unhinged,” an R-rated thriller starring Russell Crowe.
-- “Infidel” was shown in two theaters. The thriller about a kidnapped American in Cairo stars Jim Caviezel and Claudia Karvan, rated R.
-- “Happy Feet,” an animated musical from 2006 that features dancing penguins.
-- “The Secrets We Keep,” a thriller set after WW II, rated R, stars Noomi Rapace and Joel Kinnaman.
-- “The Nest,” rated R, stars Jude Law and Carrie Coon, about an American family’s troubles in an English house.
-- “The Lego Movie,” an animated adventure from 2014 with the Lego characters, rated G.
-- “RGB,” rated PG, a 2018 documentary about the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
-- “Shortcut,” a new release horror movie rated R.
