The South Florida Youth Symphony (SFYS), which recently returned from winning the Gold Medal at the prestigious International Youth Bohemia Music Festival in Prague, Czech Republic, will conclude its 54th season with a special Tribute Concert on May 19 at the Lehman Theatre, 11380 N.W. 27 Avenue (Building 5000) on the campus of Miami Dade College North Campus.
The concert, which will feature all the training divisions of the SFYS program, begins at 4 p.m. The theatre is handicapped accessible.
Two students have composed orchestral tributes to honor the late Dr. Dennis Kam, recently deceased associate conductor and SFYS resident composer. Yurri Harper-Roseberg’s piece, “A World of Twilight,” will feature two harps, orchestra and viola solo, while Yosvani Rodriguez’s piece, “Recursion,” features a solo violin.
The Southwood Magnet School girls choir, under the direction of Deborah Mar, will perform with the orchestra in the “Polovtsian Dances” by Alexander Borodin.
As a community partner in the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) program, SFYS will present 11 silver and gold medals to students, and adults, who have dedicated themselves to extensive community service in this past year.
Tickets, which include a reception following the concert to congratulate the PVSA honorees, are $15 at the door. To reserve tickets or for more information, contact SFYS at 305-238-2729.
