Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during May and early June:For Children and Families:Movies and Stories for Kids – Watch favorite movies with family and friends. The Coding Doctors Kids Club will host a fundraising event on May 21 at Anthony’s Coal Fired Pizza and Ben & Jerry’s located in the Royal Oaks Plaza. Enjoy some pizza and ice cream for a great cause. The club is looking to raise some money to buy a bundle of VEX robots. A percentage of sales will be donated to the club. Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25) recognized Mater Academy Charter High School sophomore Melanie Gonzalez as the 25th Congressional District’s winner of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition “An Artistic Discovery.” Gonzalez’s painting, titled “Sunkised” (displayed on the wall), was chosen out of 66 entries submitted from 12 participating schools. Her creative piece will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

Mater joins Autism Speaks Walk

Mater Academy’s (Mater) FBLA participated in the Miami Autism Speaks Walk on April 28. Through a partnership with the Latin American Agribusiness Development (LAAD) the team was able for raise $15,272. Mater’s FBLA has a lasting partnership with LAAD and has participated with them in the Autism Speaks Walk throughout many years.
The Sunrise Presbyterian women’s group will present its seventh annual Tea Party on June 1 from 3 to 6 p.m. Tickets for adults are $20 and $10 for children 12 and under. It will take place at the church located at 18400 N.W. 68 avenue. For more information call Carmen at (305) 308-4120.
