Two Miami Lakes Educational Center students were recently recognized for their efforts at the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Seniors Rachel Vasco and Aztil Duarte are part of MLEC’s Commercial Arts Technology program. The pair earned national medals at the awards for their art. Town honors childhood cancer patients, survivors

The Miami Lakes Town Council recognized Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with a proclamation at its September 15 council meeting.

Mayor Josh Dieguez announced that all of September was to be recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the Town of Miami Lakes.

“This goes out to all the survivors and those who are still dealing with childhood cancer,” Dieguez said.

Annual book talk offers tears, healing

The Cultural Affairs Committee presented their annual book talk on September 17 at Miami Lakes Town Hall. This year the committee hosted local author Elizabeth Castillo, author of “Dear Healing Heart.” The book is about reconnecting with yourself while caring for a special-needs child. CAC Vice Chair Elsa Reus said the evening was emotional for mothers with special need children.
