The Miami Lakes Town Council recognized Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Maj. Jose Gonzalez for his 35-year career in law enforcement.

“This is his last official meeting that he will be with us, we want to take time to honor him as he prepares to retire,” Mayor Josh Dieguez said on Nov. 18. Gonzalez will step down from his post in Miami Lakes at the end of 2025 and will retire April 10. The council proclaimed Nov. 19 as Maj. Jose Gonzalez Day.

“I was actually caught off guard, I didn’t know this was coming,” Gonzalez said. He thanked his staff, current and past council members and town residents for support he received during eight years working in Miami Lakes, the last three as commander of the district. “I appreciate it. I’ve still got another month and a half. I’m gonna miss you guys.”

The town’s Public Safety Committee presented him with a replica of the badge worn by deputies, made by Vida Custom Designs. On Jan. 5, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Lt. Eddy Ulloa will become acting commander of the town’s force until Town Manager Edward Pidermann chooses Gonzalez’s replacement.  From left: Council members Steven Herzberg, Ray Garcia and Alex Sanchez; Vice Mayor Bryan Morera; Councilman Angelo Cuadra Garcia; retired Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Abel Fernandez; Maj.
