On June 16, the Town of Miami Lakes approved funding for its planned Optimist Park improvements.
The council voted unanimously to move funds to its Optimist Park capital account to cover the cost of improvements to the park.
The proposed $3.5 million will be used to fix what the town has deemed “critical infrastructure” without changing the layout of the park.
Improvements to the park would be backstops at five fields; replacement of wooden lighting poles and LED light improvements; concrete walking paths; a prefabricated restroom; water fountains; improving drainage for five fields and safety bollards at the corner of Northwest 67th Avenue and Miami Lakeway North.
The council also voted to approve issuing the work orders to begin the improvements, which would have to be completed before Optimist baseball begins in the fall along with the start of the school year.
The Town Council voted to approve six to seven with Councilman Angelo Cuadra Garcia dissenting.
A start date for the project has not been announced.
