Even without starting quarterback Treon Harris, who missed the game with an injury, Monsignor Pace High was still no match for the No. team in the nation, Booker T. Washington, as the Tornadoes destroyed the Spartans 49-7 in the two teams’ first district game.
Last week, the Tornadoes engineered a running game that Pace didn’t have an answer for, rushing for a total 180 yards on 15 carries and scoring four running touchdowns. Without Harris, Booker T. Washington’s passing game wasn’t moving the ball down the field, so the team turned to its running game.
The Spartans’ defense wasn’t up to the challenge, nor was the offense, scoring its lowest points of the season. In other high school football action, American wiped out West Hialeah, 57-6, to win its second straight district game. Patriots quarterback Ed Crouch connected with wide receiver Kama Barnes for a total of 80 yards and three touchdowns.
Miami Springs trounced district rival Hialeah-Miami Lakes, 42-0, to keep its winning streak alive at four games. Golden Hawks running back Johnny Rembrick ran for three touchdowns in the win after missing two games with an ankle injury.
The Trojans turned the ball over four times. Goleman was seeking its first win of the season but Alonso and Tracy Mourning High spoiled the Gators’ plans with a 20-19 victory.
