Town of Miami Lakes announced that the Education Advisory Board and The Graham Companies have teamed up again to offer the 2014 Key to the Town Scholarship. This year, two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded. Eligible recipients will be graduating seniors who are residents of the town. The winners will have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to their school and community.
“It’s wonderful that The Graham Companies continues to support the Key to the Town Scholarship,” said Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez. “Two young residents will receive some much needed financial help for college.”
Interested seniors must submit a typed essay (750 words maximum) explaining in his/her own words why they should be selected to receive the scholarship. The student must demonstrate academic achievement and community service commitment, identify future goals, and include a personal obstacle he/she overcame.
An application (available on the town’s website www.miamilakes-fl.gov) must accompany the essay and contain the applicant’s name, address, telephone number, name of the High School, community service and extracurricular activities, the college or university the applicant will be attending (if available), and other leadership activities.
An official sealed high school transcript and three letters of recommendation from non-relatives, one of which must be from a teacher or school officials, must accompany the essay.
The entire package must be submitted no later than Friday, May 30, to Clarisell De Cardenas, Special Events and Committees coordinator, at 6601 Main Street, Miami Lakes, FL 33014.
All applications will be forwarded to the Education Advisory Board for their selection of the two recipients. The Mayor, Town Council and a representative of The Graham Companies will present the winners with their check at the June 10 Council meeting.
