The Miami Lakes Cars for a Cure is back and it’s shaping up to look better than last year’s event.
At 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 10 on Main Street, about 170 classic cars will be on display as part of a fund-raiser to benefit the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and honor the memory of former Vice Mayor Roberto Alonso, who had an affinity for vintage model automobiles.
This year’s event will see more food vendors including Sports Grill and Geradino’s to serve up some of great dishes for participants admiring the classic vehicles, said Roberto Alonso Jr., the event’s organizer.
“The big key this year is to see more Miami Lakes restaurants offering more options for food,” he said. “We wanted to see more vendors and big corporations for the fund-raiser.”
Alonso said 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
He said he hopes to have a doctor from the Cancer Center to speak about the deadly disease, as the goal is to make the event a big outreach for cancer awareness.
In addition, the event will feature a Dee Jay for music, awards to the best classic cars, a raffle, and more importantly the focus of cancer awareness.
“Cancer has touched everyone’s lives,” Alonso said.
Alonso gave kudos to the students at Bob Graham Education Center for raising about $2,600 through donut sales for the Cars for a Cure event.
The event is in conjunction with the Dolphins Cycling Challenge and The Graham Companies.
Alonso’s father created the first classic car show and following his death from cancer, his friends coaxed his son to resume the event to honor his memory.
But Alonso decided to turn it into a fund-raiser for cancer research.
His father’s 1964 Chevy Coupe Super Sports car will be on display at the event.
