Golf cart owners in Miami Lakes can expect a change in the rules for young drivers.
A new law passed in the recent Florida legislative session will take effect Oct. 1.
It will require drivers under the age of 18 to have a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit to operate a golf cart.
The town council on June 6 voted unanimously to align the town’s 2022 golf cart ordinance to the new state law.
Golf cart enthusiast Manny Perez supported the rule change.
“I’m a complete advocate for safety,” Perez said.
Perez lives with his family in the Lake Adele neighborhood and travels around town in his cart.
He said he’s part of a group of registered users who enjoy riding together.
Miami Lakes requires cart owners who want to ride on town streets to register their vehicles, which is an easy process, Perez said.
Cart owners must pay a one-time, $50 fee, provide proof of insurance, submit a notarized affidavit and get a permit decal to display on the back of the vehicle.

Councilmembers requested that police schedule an information session about complying with the new law. The town will also send letters about the new law to registered owners.
