With the holiday season nearly here, many charities and organizations choose to host a toy drive for underprivileged children, but after seeing a news report that research shows children who are wearing clean pajamas are psychologically healthier, calmer at night, and have more self-esteem, Lourdes Corvo decided to start her own drive. Corvo, a long-time Miami Lakes resident and co-owner of Corvo and Calas Law Firm with Perla Sole Calas began a pajama drive to help children in need.
After visiting a domestic abuse center, Corvo said toys were piled up in a room nearly to the ceiling, but the kids had no clothes. The firm has collected about 350 pajamas every year.
This is the law firm’s 10th annual Pajama and Book Drive. The firm invites colleagues, family, friends and members of the community to donate new pajamas and books for children from newborn to 16 years old. Pajamas could be donated in any size. Donations will be collected through December 16 and can be dropped off at 14750 N.W. 77 Court, Suite 300, in Miami Lakes, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Donations are tax-deductible.
The firm will be donating the pajamas and books on December 18, just in time for Christmas, to the Miami Dade County Community Action and Human Services Department which will then distribute it to children who are victims of domestic violence. The department puts together Child Admission Packages that includes a pajama and book when they come into the shelter.
