Forty-five years ago, Miami-Dade County opened a branch of its library system in Miami Lakes on land that the Sengra Corporation, later called The Graham Companies, donated for the public good.
Officials gathered on April 20 outside the shell of that building at 6699 Windmill Gate Road to kick off an extensive renovation that will last until 2028.
“This is one of our most special branches and of course with this renovation will be just a jewel, a crown jewel,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava of the learning center that is one of 51 in the system.
“We’re going to make sure this library, as part of our system, meets all of today’s needs with updated technology, expanded spaces and enhanced services.”
Vercetti Enterprises in Doral is general contractor for the approximately $8 million project that will include new wiring and plumbing, an energy-efficient cool roof and new finishes. The building is 11,334 square feet and 5,000 square feet will be added. It will have a children’s room, a tech space and outside, more parking and EV charging stations.
Danny Vercetti described Miami Lakes as his former home, where he attended Miami Lakes Educational Center, founded his company and met his wife.
“I see these public institutions as places, like the library system, as not as a handout but a hand in, to the youth, to the community that’s here,” Vercetti said.
He added that it was very special to work on projects that serve others.
Miami Lakes Mayor Josh Dieguez reminisced about his ties to his hometown library.
“This is where I got my library card,” Dieguez said. “This is where I remember renting out the Ian Fleming novels for James Bond. … I’m looking forward to seeing the next generation make their own memories at this site.”
