February is American Heart Health Month.

The Town of Miami Lakes wants to raise awareness about heart disease by asking folks to wear red on Friday, Feb. 5.

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death for women, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Ways to prevent or combat the disease -- which can lead to a fatal heart attack -- include these lifestyle changes, the institute says:

--Increase physical activity with aerobic exercise

--Know and monitor your blood pressure numbers

--Stop smoking

--Eat a diet that includes vegetables, fruit, whole grains, low-fat dairy, fish, poultry, beans and limit fatty meats, full-fat dairy products, tropical oils as well as beverages with sugar and sweets.

--Get good sleep

--Control your weight
