Green Corridor District paves way for clean energy financing

Miami Lakes Town Council voted at the December regular meeting to join the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) Program.

The PACE Program provides upfront financing for energy conservation and efficiency (i.e. energy-efficient heating, cooling, or ventilation systems), renewal energy (i.e. solar panels), Wind resistance (i.e. impact resistant windows) and other improvements.

Through these improvements, residents and business property owners are able to reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs, fortify private properties, preserve property values, and stimulate the local economy by the creation of needed construction jobs.

The Council’s unanimous vote makes Miami Lakes the most recent of 15 communities in Miami-Dade County to become part of he groundbreaking Green Corridor District and tap into more than $550 million of private capital funding for residential and commercial building energy upgrades and hurricane protection improvements.

“This decision is all about powering the local economy while reinforcing the Town’s reputation as an environmental leader,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “The PACE program creates jobs that can’t be outsourced while driving economic activity and tax revenue to fund local services all at the same time as helping our residents and businesses access capital to help pay to improve their properties. Co-sponsored by Councilmember Tony Lama and myself, the Council and I are very happy to bring this option to the people of Miami Lakes.”

“Miami Lakes and all of the communities in South Florida’s Green Corridor District are leading the next era of progressive, smart city policy,” said Joe Spector, director of operations for Ygrene Energy Fund Florida, the program’s third party administrator. “These communities have elected to jumpstart economic growth and forge a reliable source for building improvement financing. We welcome the Town of Miami Lakes to the Green Corridor.”
