Miami Lakes resident Erika Castroman is a softball superstar.

Playing for Miami Lakes Optimist since the tender age of eight, the shortstop has starred on her recreational team, the Heat, and her travel team, Miami Lakes Lil Heat, which competed against elite teams throughout the state of Florida.

And for her stellar performance on the diamond, Erika was recognized by La Copa Dorada (the Gold Cup), which is a program started by Roly Martin, a respected member of the sportscasting community, who honors outstanding athletes of Latin descent.

“We are extremely happy and honored for this award,” said Alex Castroman, Erika’s father. “She has worked extremely hard to get where she is today.”

He has been a member of Miami Lakes Optimist for the past 22 years.

Erika’s sister, Alexis, won the same award three years ago.
