Local high school student-athletes named to variety of All-Dade teams

A group of local student-athletes made The Miami Herald All-Dade teams in baseball, softball, track and field, volleyball, badminton and flag football.

In addition, local student-athletes were nominees for male and female scholar-athletes.
Nominees for All-Dade scholar-athletes for male and female included Goleman’s Carlos Bello (water polo, swimming) who has recorded a 4.9 GPA, an 1700 score on the SAT, and 26 on the ACT, and Michelle Oliva (softball and bowling), with an 5.0 GPA, 1230 score on the SAT and a 26 on the ACT; Hialeah Gardens’ Anthony  Rodriguez (soccer and badminton), 3.8 GPA, and scored a 24 on the ACT, and Sierra Labra (bowling, cross-country, tennis, soccer and water polo), with a 5.1 GPA, an 1800 on the SAT and 25 on the ACT; Mater Academy’s Chris Mejia (basketball) with a 4.39 GPA, 1100 on the SAT and 22 on the ACT, and Yanisbel Ruiz (cheerleading) with a 5.16 GPA and 1130 on the SAT and 25 on the ACT;  and Pace’s Alexander Perez (wrestling) with a 4.39 GPA, 920 on the SAT and 16 on the ACT, and Juliette Dubon (soccer, cross-country and track and field) with a 5.29 GPA, and a 1150 on the SAT.  

For baseball, making the 9A-7A First Team was American center fielder Jose Chavez, who recorded a .480 batting average and 15 RBI. Hialeah Gardens senior player Allan Berios was named to the All-Dade Second Team.

Third team members included Hialeah Gardens pitcher Marcos Ruiz and his teammate, outfielder Nathan Llanes; and Mater Academy sophomore outfielder Lewis Menendez.
Honorable mentions included Mater Academy players Tyler Perez, Brandon Dudley, Joe Soto and Dayron Lopez.

For Class 6A-2A, Pace pitchers Chris Rodriguez (8-2, 85 strikeouts  0.33 ERA), and Manny Rodriguez (4-0, 31 strikeouts and 1.02 ERA), along with Goleman outfielder Thomas Hernandez (.483, 26 RBI), made the All-Dade First Team.
Second Team players included Goleman pitcher Mario Lopez and the Gators’ designated hitter Kevin Perez.

All-Dade Third Team pitchers included Mater Lakes Academy ace Rene Arauz, Pace ace Matt Darder, Goleman ace Mario Lopez and his teammate tosser Adrian Garrastazu. Pace third baseman Andres Sanchezalso made the team.  

Honorable mentions included Pace players Nick Fusco, Jesse Castro, Jonathan Reyes-Diaz and Bryan Diaz.

For softball, making the 9A-7A All-Dade First Team was American infielder Tyenna Colon (.505, three home runs and 41 RBI), and Second Team players included American pitcher Ashley Alfonso and American player Alexis Guzman.

All-Dade Third Team members included Mater Academy player Ibis Abrue and American outfielder Yanelis Fernandez.

Honorable mentions included American player Karla Soza and  Mater Academy players Maria Barranco, Amanda Diaz and Ailani Loureiro.

Making the All-Dade First Team for 6A-2A, were Pace pitcher Sofia Dominguez (15-12, 166 strikeouts and 1.05 ERA), Pace infielder Monica Marquez (.515, one home run and 22 RBI), and Goleman designated hitter Natalie Costero (.637, seven home runs and 29 RBI).
All-Dade Second Team players included Goleman infielder Michelle Oliva and Pace infielders Helen Rios and Natalie Rodriguez.

Honorable mentions included Goleman players Emily Bacallao, Natalie Perez, Juliet Viana and Denise Hernandez; and Pace players Tiffany Pou and Cassidy Ziegler. 

For flag football, All-Dade First Team members included Mater Academy running back and defensive back Emily Acosta (93 attempts for 1,016 yards, 10  touchdowns, 52 pulls and 10 interceptions); Pace quarterback and defensive back Vernisha Jenkins (2,374 total yards, 46 touchdowns, 38 extra points and 8 interceptions); Pace wide receiver and linebacker Thammar Petitcar (73 tackles, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions); and Pace running back and wide receiver Destiny Wilson (1,796 total yards, 34 touchdowns and 12 interceptions). 

All-Dade Second Team members included Pace wide receiver and defensive back Sophia Gonzalez, Pace linebacker and center Starla Labady, and Pace wide receiver and defensive back Simi Olowodola; and Mater Academy punt returner Karla Vegas.

Honorable mentions included Mater Academy’s Emily Tercero, Danielle Edinger, Cindy Aragon and Melanie Sequeda; Hialeah Gardens players Brandy Arellana, Danaisy Abascal, Gianna Gutierrez and Iris Martinez; and Pace players Ketshia  Robillard, Yani Sosa, Etini Mendi and Jaesha Morley.

For Track and Field, named to the All-Dade First Team were Dade Christian athlete Milton Ingraham, who won the state title in the discus with a score of 157-10 and finished sixth in the shot put with 49-5 at state; and American athlete Tyrese Cooper who won state titles for the 200 (20.87) and the 400 (46.34).

Second Team All-Dade track and field athletes included Pace’s Joshua Celthen who finished with a time of :158  in the 800 at the state event.

Honorable mentions included Dade Christian athlete Amanda Rodriguez and Mater Academy athletes Rahyah Andressohn, Sunniah Caper and Venus Garcia.

For Badminton, making the All-Dade First Team was Goleman player Patricia Miranda, who won the girls’ singles championship at the GMAC.
