Main Street Platers host magic act and drama in June at the Playhouse

Community Wednesday, June 4, 2014

The Main Street Players are hosting two upcoming performances, a magic act and a full-length drama, in late June at the Main Street Playhouse, 6766 Main Street.

On Saturday, June 28, at 7 p.m., the Players are bringing back world-renowned Cuban-American magician, Dylan Ace, for one show only. Tickets are $12 general admission and are available at the door at 6:30 p.m., or online at www.mainstreetplayers.com.

Dylan has appeared on every major American and Latin television network, with regular appearances on Latin television. Ace has served as an opening act for the biggest stars in show business – Paul Simon, Gloria Estefan, Celia Cruz, Julio Iglesias and Lenny Kravitz to name a few.

On Monday, June 30, at 8 p.m., the Players will host the South Florida Theater League’s Summer Theater Fest Reading Series when they present The Pot by Glenn Hutchinson.  This full-length drama, directed by Florida International University professor, Ivan Lopez, is about a college student, Laura, who brings her boyfriend, Rick, home for Thanksgiving.

Despite living in the United States since he was 4 years old, Rick is still undocumented. The play presents what happens when Rick meets Laura’s family, including her father, a recently elected state legislator. Narrated by Laura’s adopted biracial brother, Nathan, The Pot explores questions of race, identity, nationality, and the borders and boundaries people place between one other.

There is no charge for tickets for this event though donations will be accepted by the Main Street Players to help defray local expenses. The Main Street Playhouse of Miami Lakes is proud to display one of the South Florida Theater League’s umbrellas representing the summer reading series theme: “Come Under Our Umbrella.” It has been uniquely personalized to give it a Main Street Players flavor, showcasing 40 years of the history of the community theatre in South Florida.
