Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs are available for the public during October:
For Children and Families:
Paws to Read – This reading program aims to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of therapy dogs who serve as literacy mentors. Parents may bring a book or choose one from the library collection. Event is at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 8.
Reading Ready Toddler Storytime – Stories, songs and activities for toddlers and their caregivers. For ages 18 months to 3 years old at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, October 6, 13, 20 and 27.
Homeschool Science Class – Learn how to create different science projects. Space is limited. Contact branch to register. Scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19.
Library Lego Club – Join the library for monthly Lego builds at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 22.
Not SO Spooky Storytime – Families can come treat themselves to a not-so-spooky storytime where they can “shake them bones” with dance and songs. Children in costumes are welcome at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 29.
For Teens:
Teen Club – Captain America: Civil War. Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Educational Advisory Board for ages 12-18 years at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4.
Teen Club: Not Your Mama’s Mummies – Dare to discover mummies you never imagined in places you never suspected. For ages 12-18 years at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11.
Teen Club: Sugar Skulls Makeup Demo – Heather Green, also known as Silly Heather, is the owner of Silly Farm Supplies and the co-producer of the Face and Body Art International Convention. She will demonstrate “Day of the Dead” makeup also known as “Sugar Skulls.” Presented by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18.
Teen Club – Teens meet to play video games, watch anime, draw or discuss books at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 25.
For Adults:
Go Club of Miami Lakes – Now everyone can embark on a journey and uncover the ancient game of strategy, attack and defense, the Game of Go. Meets from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, October 8, 15 and 22.
Meditation – Meditation derived from Raja Yoga which will help develop inner calm, clear thinking and personal well-being on Fridays, October 7, 14, 21 and 28. (Call branch for time.)
Book Discussion Group – Call the branch for this month’s title for the adult book discussion club which meets at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 18.
Flavors of Latin Cuisine – Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with some Latin flavor! Join Raquel Roque, author of three books on Latin cooking, for a lively conversation about Latin cuisine. Learn new recipes, discuss your favorite dishes, and enjoy a special tasting (while supplies last) at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 22.
USCIS Information Table – United States Citizenship and Immigration Service staff will provide information, materials and answer general questions regarding the citizenship process, at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, October 24.
Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart Community Outreach – A member of his staff will be on hand to discuss federal issues or any problem a constituent may have with a federal agency at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24.
Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
