Miami Lakes closes parks against COVID-19

Parks and recreation facilities in Miami Lakes -- including tot-lots, athletic fields and the K9-Cove dog park – were going to be closed after Thursday to comply with an executive order by Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez.

The goal is to prevent the spread of COVID-19 -- the coronavirus that has caused a global pandemic -- by enforcing social distancing.

Town officials said signs will be posted at parks as well as at two community centers and a youth center that are also closed.

“We are creating signs which will be posted at all parks,” said Miami Lakes Communications Director Clarisell De Cardenas.

Gimenez also ordered closed of all Miami-Dade County’s beaches,

dine-in service at restaurants; bars; clubs; taverns; casinos; banquet halls, movie theaters; breweries; cafeterias and gyms.

Businesses allowed to stay open and operate fully and are considered essential are supermarkets; pharmacies; convenience stores; drug stores; hospitals and other health care facilities.

According to De Cardenas, there were no known cases of COVID-19 reported cases in Miami Lakes as of March 19.

Public schools were ordered closed until April 15, and many businesses have ordered employees to work from home.
