Miami Lakes Garden Club presents 'A Look at GMO's' on Jan. 27

Community Wednesday, January 22, 2014

The Miami Lakes Garden Club (MLGC) announced its upcoming Gardening Program Series presentation "A look at GMOs," a free lecture presentation at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, January 27, at Miami Lakes Community Center West, 15151 Montrose Road.

The topic of this presentation will be centered on the history of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) and the recent studies of the impact it has on a person’s  health. The presentation will be given by Jaqueline Velken.

Velken's reason for this presentation is to help educate the community about the impact of GMOs in food. She is a Miami Lakes Garden Club member and an Art History student. She also volunteers at Fairchild Elementary School, where she is currently working on planting seven vegetable gardens for the students there.

Her presentation "A Look at GMOs" will give a quick history of GMOs and she will discuss recent health dilemmas that have arisen in conjunction with GMOs. She will provide statistics and surveys about GMO and non-GMO consumers and shed light on GMO labeling and the groups making efforts to conserve non-GMO seeds.

Velken will also present possible local solutions to the problems associated with GMOs. There will be a question and answer session at the end of the presentations as well as informative handouts.
