The Council of Garden Club Presidents of Dade County, Inc. presented two awards to the Miami Lakes Garden Club on May 15.
The club received an award for the best program during a meeting when participants learned to make wreaths from succulent plants.
It was also recognized for its Arbor Day planting of a live oak tree in memory of a past Miami Lakes Garden Club president, the late Dorothy Cook.
“It’s an honor,” club President Audrey Valhuerdi said. “We also were given recognition from the presidents in our district, District 12, of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.”
The club’s past president MaryLou Ruiz applied for the awards, Valhuerdi said.
Club meetings are held the fourth Monday of the month and will resume Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Mary Collins Community Center.
The gatherings are free and open to gardeners from Miami Lakes and surrounding areas.
