The Miami Lakes Optimist Club’s Heat girls 18-and-under All-Star team traveled to Key West in late June for their second annual tournament, finishing 5-0, and repeating as champions for the event.

The girls went 3-0 on Saturday, June 29, and 2-0 the following day defeating the Jacksonville Bandits by a score of 8-0.

“We had a stellar performance by our three pitchers, Alexis Castroman, Kayleen Romero and Faith Vazquez,” said head coach Alex Castroman. “Our defense was a strong as I’ve ever seen, and offensively, Sharon Zamora put on a show, going 7-for-13.”

The girls went back-to-back at Key West since bringing the trophy home last year, Castroman said.

“Also these girls have worked hard all season long and it showed during the tournament,” he said. “We are all extremely proud of their hard work and dedication to this sport. We are also thankful to their parents for their commitment to bringing their girls to practice and games all summer long. Congratulations to our Miami Heat!”
