Stephanie Brito, a senior in the Journalism Strand of the Cambridge Academy at Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) was awarded the Top Female Student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Summer Program (MITES).

Brito was one of 70 students selected from across the country and Puerto Rico to participate in the MIT program, the Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES).

The program is a rigorous six-week residential academic enrichment program for promising high school seniors who have a strong academic record and are interested in studying and exploring careers in science and engineering. Brito enrolled in college courses, including calculus 3, physics 2 (electricity and magnetism), biochemistry, digital design and humanities.

In digital design, her team created a functional website that matches students to summer programs based on their input on a quiz that they generated to evaluate students’ strengths, talents, and interests. Brito greatly enjoyed her experience at MIT.

Brito greatly enjoyed her experience at MIT. “MITES made me realize that the STEM field isn’t as rigid as it seems. I have a passion for journalism and biology and there are so many areas where I can combine both of my passions. I also realized that there are so many minorities and women who are successful in STEM, which inspires me to do the same,” said Brito.

Brito is The Harbinger’s new Editor-in-Chief. The publication has a record of outstanding and well-rounded students serving as editor and according to Journalism teacher Neyda Borges, Brito is no exception.

Brito excels in Math and Science as well as in English and the humanities. She has consistently won awards in all of her subject areas and has been named Student of the Year each year that she’s been at MLEC.  Each summer she has participated in programs at Ivy League Universities such as Princeton, Carnegie Melon and now MIT.
