Religious Wednesday, December 17, 2014

Mother of Our Redeemer Catholic Church, 8445 N.W. 186 Street, recently announced the formation of its Consultative Board, which is tasked with planning, policy development, financing, technology, public relations, building and grounds, alumni relations and marketing.

Consultative Board members include Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Manny Cid, Laline Veloso, David Esquivel, Ingeborg Grenet, Father Jimmy Acevedo, school principal Ana E. Casariego (administrative officer), Hilda Fernandez (secretary) and Peggy Gonzalez (vice chair), Tony Colmenares and Raul Gastesi.

Mother of Our Redeemer, established in 1988, continues to serve Catholics to the north of Miami Lakes. Father Fernando Compaired, the founding pastor, served the parish from 1988 to 2005.

The first mass was celebrated at American High School before moving to a storefront at a nearby shopping center. The parish then erected the hall that continues to function as a meeting and worship space for more than 1,200 families who attend its weekend Spanish and English Masses.

The parish established an elementary school in 2002 with students attending from pre-kindergarten-3 through eighth grade. Volunteers operate a telephone prayer line and staff a parish gift shop for religious articles, which funds numerous outreach ministries, including aiding the needy with funds for emergency rent, medicine, food and clothing.
