Barbara Goleman High’s baseball team faced an uphill battle in the Region 4-6A quarterfinal game last week against defending state champion and nationally-ranked Archbishop McCarthy.
But after winning the District Championship and GMAC tournament, the Gators just couldn’t keep up with the Mavericks, who left Goleman with an 11-1 defeat in a game that was called in the sixth inning.
Archbishop McCarthy faced their district foe, American Heritage, in the semifinal this week, hoping to advance to the state tournament and win their sixth state title in seven years.
The Mavericks lead 5-0 in the first inning and poured it on from there until the game was stopped because of the mercy-run rule.
All season long, the Gators’ bats were hot but the Mavericks’ pitching staff cooled them off.
Pitcher Yordani Carmona delivered a stellar performance, retiring the first 11 Goleman batters in four innings of work.
Johnny Leone and Joe Perez finished the Gators’ batters off to seal the victory.
After winning the GMAC tournament, the Gators defeated Miami Springs, 8-1, to win the 16-6A District Championship for the second consecutive year.
