Out of the Darkness event, Aug 10

The event is in memory of a local resident that took his life, Victor Ruiz. Emily Wong which is a very outspoken, driven and smart young girl in this community, was a close friend of Victor Ruiz when he took his life. It was at the moment of his passing that she wanted to bring Suicide Awareness to her community.

This event draws near to their hearts at the Veterans committee as 22 Veterans commit suicide a day. That’s a staggering number. Additionally, suicide is the tenth leading cause of death amongst all people. Many years ago talking about suicide was taboo but with figures such as Robin Williams, Todd Tuengen and Anthony Bourdain committing suicide, it was their committee that decided to partner up with Wong and Ruiz’s family to bring this to the forefront of discussion.
