Preparations are being made for a public celebration of the incorporation of Miami Lakes.

A committee comprised of the leaders of volunteer boards and committees in town are planning a big bash that is proposed for Veterans Park on Dec. 6.

“We want the whole community to enjoy this special event,” said Felicia Salazar, who is chairing the anniversary committee and leads the Cultural Affairs Committee.

The other organizers are Vice Chair Vivian Levy of the Special Needs Advisory Board; Secretary Matthew Casamayor, of the Economic Development Committee; Rosario Navarro of the Elderly Affairs Committee; William Perez of the Veterans Committee; Brian Rodriguez of the Youth Activities Task Force and Rudy Lloredo of the Neighborhood Improvement Committee.

Ideas to mark the town’s 25th anniversary include having professional bands, school bands and dance groups perform; food trucks; a beer garden; fireworks and the creation of a new time capsule by the

Youth Activities Task Force.

The actual date the town became a municipality, independent from Miami-Dade County, was Dec. 5, 2000.

Plans may include having people appear in cow mascot costumes; photo opportunities and souvenirs for those who attend, and a sensory inclusive zone for people with special needs.

At the committee’s July meeting, resident Kimberly Trelles, owner of the Trelles Cottage proposed the committee contact local artists to create a mural.

The committee will have to vote on the item if they decide to include that project.

Final plans will eventually be presented to the town council to approve, including the location and date.

The town website, MiamiLakes-fl.gov will have a page for volunteers to sign up to help that night.
