The Miami-Dade School Board unanimously approved three items proposed by Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman at its regular meeting last week. The members of the 2014 Miami-Dade County Legislative Delegation were recognized for their help toward achieving fair and equitable funding for the school district.
“I commend the Legislative Delegation of Miami-Dade for the strong support given to Miami-Dade County Public Schools and for sponsoring an increase to fund public education in Florida for about $574 million,” said Hantman.
The School Board voted in favor of the feasibility of implementing South Florida Commuter Services' School Pool Program, a free service, to alleviate traffic congestion around public schools and increase safety. This free service already benefits more than 50 schools in South Florida.
The Board also endorsed the 5-E School Assessment Tool developed by the University of Miami WalkSafe and BikeSafe programs. Six schools were recognized for their participation in the pilot program: Lawton Chiles Middle School, and North Dade Middle centers kindergarten through eighth grade, Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center, Carrie P. Meek / Westview K-8 Center, Nathan B.Young Elementary and Dr. Robert B. Ingram Elementary.
“As an advocate for the safety of students, I commend both these programs for promoting safety and encouraging students and their families to carpool, bicycle or walk to and from school with other children,” Hantman noted.
