Spanish Lake Elementary students are celebrating and honoring a variety of events for the month of February. In addition to American History Month, Black History Month and Valentine's Day, SLE is hosting ongoing parent workshops, a family garden evening, and honoring military heroes.
The family garden aims to further educate the SLE family on the values of nutritional edible gardening. Attending families will be able to taste a variety of organic fruits and veggies, as well as being able to purchase from the SLE's farmer’s market.
SLE fifth grade teachers and students, led by fifth grade team leader, Natalie Valderama, honored military heroes by creating a tribute for Air Force Master Sgt. Martin Laureano Gonzales and Private First Class Michael Bagley.
Gonzales was working as a U.S. military liaison aboard an aircraft that went down near Columbia in October 2013. He was the husband of fifth grade teacher Michele Gonzales. Bagley, the son of first grade teacher Rose Bagley, was awarded the Purple Heart for his service and injury received while serving in Afghanistan.
The hands in the tribute join together to form the American flag which symbolizes the student's value in being part of The United States of America.
