Spanish Lake Elementary (SLE) students were introduced to the basics of the stock market and how it works as part of the economy. The engaging activity incorporated the county’s Bring Your Own Device Initiative used for teamwork and study with parent consent. Those who participated in this grade five enrichment activity, watched their investments as if they were their own, understood types of investing and the benefits of diversification.

The activity opened up a new world using mathematical, analytical, and research skills. The students learned ownership and came to understand influence in most companies through their family purchases.

Jacqueline Arias-Gonzalez, SLE principal, shared some of the student comments about their new-found knowledge as they showed her what they learned.

“While doing business and making money with investments, I also learned how to work within a group and to listen and consider each person’s research and input,” noted one student.

“I learned lessons about money and the power of investing,” said another.

From The Stock Market Game, teacher and sponsor Sharon Wallen indicated that the students have learned important lessons linked to real world experiences.

“These children have a promising financial future and have gained a feeling of empowerment and the need to budget and save,” said Wallen.
