The Florida League of Cities last week honored State Senator René Garcia (R-Hialeah/Miami Lakes) with a 2016 Defender of Home Rule Award at its 90th Annual Conference in Hollywood.
“The award was presented to García for his tireless efforts during the 2016 legislative session to advance the League’s legislative agenda and protect the Home Rule powers of Florida’s cities. Recipients of the Defender of Home Rule Award are legislators who consistently vote and advocate on behalf of the League and its members.
“I am honored to receive this prestigious award from the Florida League of Cities,” said García. “Working closely with the League to preserve Home Rule in our communities and to better understand local issues is the best way to give citizens a greater voice in the determination of local government policies.”
Garcia was first elected to the Senate in 2012, and he automatically won reelection this year when he ran unopposed.
