A proposed emergency medical center that would be operated by Baptist Health South Florida is scheduled to be presented to the Miami Lakes town council during its April 12 meeting.

The Graham Companies is seeking approval from the town for the project which would rise on 3 acres at the corner of Northwest 77th Court and Northwest 149th Street.

The health care company would build the facility on land it would lease from The Graham Companies.  It would employ approximately 50 people.

The property is currently a pasture for Holstein dairy cows.

According to the property owner’s letter of intent, the proposed single-story, 19,800 square-foot emergency department would treat patients for conditions such as chest pain, stroke, breathing difficulties or severe bleeding.

Patients requiring an overnight hospital stay would be taken to another facility.

The emergency department would be the first of its kind in town. It would be built across the street from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Station 64 and would join doctors, dentists and the Select Specialty Hospital for recovery from critical illnesses that are in Miami Lakes Business Park West.

It will also be near a senior complex planned for Commerce Way that will include housing for independent people as well as for those who need assistance or skilled nursing, or who may visit a senior community center to be built at the site.

Residents did not attend a public workshop about the project that was held March 17 at Town Hall.
