Town sets lake maintenance standards

The Town of Miami Lakes officially adopted minimum maintenance standards for its two lake districts, Lake Hilda and Lake Patricia.

It happened through a formal amendment to its existing agreement with Solitude Lake Management, the vendor responsible for maintaining the two lakes.

The decision was to fulfill the town’s commitment to preserving the environmental health and aesthetic value of its lakes, a town press statement said.

The new standards are “based on the town’s current level of service and establish consistent and enforceable guidelines for maintaining lake health, water quality, and shoreline aesthetics” for the lakes the town maintains, it said. The new standards include:

     •  Monthly service visits to both lakes

     •  Control of algae and invasive plants

     •  Removal of litter and debris

     •  Management of shoreline vegetation

     •  Quarterly water quality testing

     •  Reports containing photos and site observations

The town said its adoption of the standards are “a recommended framework for communities and HOAs in town.

The council’s action  “does not impose any new requirement on privately maintained lakes or HOAs,” but is “a voluntary benchmark that those communities may consider...,” it said.

The initiative began after the town council discussed it in October, 2024, when Mayor Joshua Dieguez emphasized the need for a formal framework to ensure consistent service, especially for communities without active HOAs, the town said.
