Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs are available for the public during July:
Summer Reading Program: This year’s program runs from now to August 1. No matter your age, all are eligible for a chance to win a fabulous prize. Just read or listen to a book, attend a library program or download and listen to an eBook for a minimum of two hours a week. Visit the branch to pick up an entry form with the official contest rules. The program is made possible with the support of the Miami Dolphins Foundation and the Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library.
For Children and Families:
Every Hero Has A Story: What’s Your Super Power? – Children will learn about real life everyday heros and what makes them special. Limited to 25 participants and best for ages 7-12. Meets at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, July 9, 16 and 30.
Lego Jr. Building – Join in for some Duplo and Lego building fun for ages 3-6 years old. Meets at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 11.
Home Depot Kid’s Workshop – A hands-on workshop where participants can learn to create and build something for their home with easy to use tools and materials. What you make, you keep! Registration is required for ages 6-12 and programing limited to 25 participants. Program made possible by the Miami Lakes Home Depot at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 23.
Build-A-Coaster – Explore the basics of physics, energy, force, friction and electricity in an applied, thrilling way as you learn how engineers build roller coasters and power cities. Program made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board for ages 7-12 at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 18.
Saturday Matinee at the Library - A family friendly film, “Up,” will be shown at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 25.
For Teens:
Tween Book Club – A children’s book club for ages 8-12 that meets once a month to discuss the chosen book. This month’s title is “39 Clues: Maze of Bones” by Rick Riodan. Meets at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 25.
Unmasked! Matinee – Teen club presents a series of films celebrating heroes, real or fictional for ages 13-19 at 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. The schedule include "47 Ronin" on July 1 "Batman: Assault on Arkham" on July 8, "The Avengers" on July 15, "Final Fantasy: Advent Children" on July 22 and "Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox" on July 29.
Teen Club - Teens meet to play video games, watch anime, draw or discuss books at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, July 7, 14 and 28.
For Adults:
Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr.’s Mobile Office - The outreach provides an opportunity for the community to speak with the Commissioner and/or his representative from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, July 13.
Escape the Ordinary with Extraordinary Films - Plan an grown-up night out to see “Monuments Men” or “Eat, Pray, Love”... (viewers choice) ...at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 13.
Escape the Ordinary with Extraordinary Arts and Crafts - Make extraordinary art with ordinary materials. Registration required for ages 18 years and up at 1 p.m. on Monday, July 20.
Book Discussion Group - This month’s title is “The Fort” by Bernard Cornwell at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21.
Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s Outreach – A member of Rep. Diaz-Balart’s staff will visit the library to discuss federal issues or any problem a constituent may have with a federal agency from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22.
Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
