Without any vetoes, Town could receive $13 million in state grants

Thanks to Florida State Senator Manny Diaz, Jr., Miami Lakes was awarded more than $13 million for capital improvement projects during the 2019 Legislative Session.
The town was awarded $6 million for the Miami Lakes Business Park SE Resilient Transportation Infrastructure project.
Miami Lakes also received $5.3 million for the N.W. 87 Avenue Ramp to MDX project, and $2 million for the second phase of the Miami Lakes Royal Oaks Drainage Improvements project.
In the federal government, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio reintroduced a bill to help Miami Lakes and Ocoee, Florida establish their own independent zip codes.
The legislation requries the United States Postal Service to take the necessary steps to help the two cities accomplish their goals.
For Miami Lakes, an independent zip code would save residents money by lowering car insurance rates and homeowners’ insurance premiums.
“Establishing new zip codes for Miami Lakes and Ocoee will benefit residents in these communities,” Rubio said. “I am proud to reintroduce the legalization that is long overdue.”
Miami Lakes has been seeking its own zip code for years.
U.S. Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart sponsored two bills on two different occasions to help Miami Lakes establish an independent zip code but they never got pass the Senate.
