Miami Lakes Kobushi Karate team wins 17 medals during FLA. Sunshine State Games

An 11-member team from Miami Lakes’ Kobushi Karate Dojo dominated their respective divisions at the 2014 Florida Sunshine State Games bringing home a total of 17 medals.

Team members, who varied in ages from 8 to 44, were trained by former Pan-American karate champion Tony Garcia, and coached by national champion Melissa Silva, Jessica Benavides and Nieves Garcia, all residents of Miami Lakes.

They trained using traditional karate training as well as the latest in athletic training methods for their winning edge.

Florida’s Sunshine State Games, an Olympic-style Sports Festival, celebrated its 35th anniversary with competition in 28 sports this year, and is the longest continuously-running State Games in the U.S. More than 5,000 athletes participated in the events during May and June.
