Trojans students are in the driver's seat

A disturbing statistic for parents of young drivers is that motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of accidental deaths among teens. In fact, 2,433 teens aged 16-19 died in auto accidents in 2016, and almost half were not wearing seatbelts.

Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior (HML) is proud to offer a hands-on driver education course for its students. Taught by coach Mike Turner, students receive 30 hours of classroom training and six hours of behind-the-wheel driving. Turner is a certified Driver Education instructor, and also holds a certificate as a third party tester for the state of Florida.

Students enrolled in his class can earn their learners permit and Drivers License after completing the graduating license procedure on campus. HML is one of the few schools that continue to offer a hands-on driver’s education rather than a Florida Virtual School option.

“My husband and I remember driving around in those white cars, and the excitement we felt as we received our rating on our first day of driver’s ed,” reminisced Miami Lakes resident, HML graduate and HML parent Virnalis Arvelo. “There’s nothing like the confidence one gains by actually driving behind the wheel versus taking it online.”
