Mayor's basketball classic will aid Danny Quesada
Miami Lakes is seeking revenge against Doral when the two cities clash in the 2019 Mayor’s 2nd annual Basketball Classic as town employees will try to wrestle the cup away from their rival in a showdown.
The contest, pitting Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid’s team against the team led by Doral Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Friday, April 12, at Barbara Goleman High School, 14100 N.W. 89 Avenue.
But the game will take on a much deeper meaning as the proceeds will benefit the Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) for Team Danny Quesada, who’s in dire need of a double lung transplant. Danny suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, a hereditary disorder affecting the exocrine glands.
COTA is a non-profit organization that helps children and young adults who need a life-saving transplant by providing fundraising assistance. The money also covers expenses for post-operative care such as transportation, ventilator and pain medications while recovering from a lung transplant.
“We feel blessed and thank Miami Lakes and Doral for choosing Danny as a beneficiary of this event,” said Danny’s father Mike Quesada.
Last year, Doral beat Miami Lakes in the inaugural game, and the town has been waiting for the rematch for an entire year.
In fact, Cid and his team have been training and practicing for months preparing for the rematch.

In a related event, the Miami Lakes community will participate in the Great Strides Miami Lakes, a walk scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 13, at Meadow Walk Park. This year’s event marks the first time Danny Quesada will not participate since he is in North Carolina awaiting his transplant
“For the first time in 17 years, Danny won’t attend the walk,” said Mike Quesada. “We have been involved with Cystic Fibrosis medical research for a preventable cure. I encourage everyone to come out and walk for Danny.”
